Creating a character

The "HOT SEAT" is an exercise designed to make the person connect and be more in tune with his or her character. This game was taken from the book "On Stage: Theater Games and Activities for Kids"

HOT SEAT: 3 or more actors

Once you're in character, it's time to let everyone else meet the new you.

PROPS: One chair

To begin this game, everyone needs to put on a character they had previously created or the character they are developing for a play. Place one chair at the front of the room. Everyone sits on the floor in front of and facing the chair.
One player begins by sitting in the chair. This player is in the hot seat. One at a time, the other players ask questions of the person in the hot seat. The person in the hot seat answers these questions in character; that is, answers the questions as the character would, giving responses that fit the character they are portraying. You can ask any questions you like. Find out as much about the character as you can.
When everyone's questions have been answered, a new player sits in the hot seat and answers questions. Continue until everyone has had a turn in the hot seat.

Acting Tip: If you're in the hot seat and someone asks you a question you're not certain how your character would answer, make up an answer. There are no wrong answers in this activity.
